In a significant move, Ipswich Town has signed Burnley defender Dara O’Shea for an initial £12 million, which could rise by another £3 million with add-ons. The Republic of Ireland international has committed to a five-year deal with the Tractor Boys.
Dara O’Shea is the 11th addition to Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna’s squad this summer. This follows the weekend acquisition of winger Jack Clarke from Sunderland. O’Shea is also the second Burnley player to join Ipswich, following the earlier signing of goalkeeper Arijanet Muric. This strategic summer spending indicates Ipswich’s ambition to climb the ranks.
O’Shea expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “It was really hard not to pay attention to everything the team was able to achieve last season and to have the chance to join a club with such ambition and momentum was really attractive. At this stage of my career, it’s the perfect time to make the move.” His experience and skills are expected to bolster Ipswich’s defense.
The 25-year-old defender is a product of the West Bromwich Albion academy and has over 100 appearances for the Baggies. He joined Burnley for £7 million in June 2023, following their promotion to the Premier League. With Burnley, O’Shea scored four goals in 35 appearances, including a goal in the season-opening win against Luton. It’s worth noting that he did not feature in Burnley’s recent 1-0 defeat by Sunderland, as manager Scott Parker confirmed his impending departure from the club.
